According to a recent study by the National Institute of Dental Research, about a quarter of young and middle-aged working adults, and 68 percent of people over age 65, have the beginnings of serious gum disease - periodontitis. You're considered to have serious gum disease if at least one tooth has started to loosen or become detached from the gum due to bone loss. The bone loss is a result of unchecked bacteria, invisibly eating away at the bones and ligaments under the gums that secure your teeth.

In addition to proper nutrition, regular brushing and routine dental check-ups, virtually all dentists advise good old-fashioned flossing twice a day to keep your teeth clean. Whatever you do beyond that can only help, and there are many products currently on the market that are recommended by the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Therapeutics as safe and effective in preventing gum disease.

Dentists continue to recommend flossing as the most effective way to prevent periodontal disease.
